History of the University

Established in 1969, the Institute of Agricultural Technology (ITA of Mostaganem), which trained Engineers in Applied Agronomy, was established as a higher education institution in 1978, the date of the birth of the University Centre of Mostaganem, which will ensure higher education in Biology, Common Core of Medical Sciences and Chemistry. In 1984, a new restructuring in ENS and INES was carried out (ENS / Fundamental Sciences, ENS / Physical Education and Sports, INES biology and INES industrial chemistry). In 1992 the university Centre of Mostaganem is reinstalled.

The University of Mostaganem Abdelhamid Ibn Badis “UMAB” was created in 1998 by Executive Decree No. 98-220 of July 07, 1998.

Since then, the University of Mostaganem has experienced a rapid growth in its infrastructure and capacity, as well as the growth of its staff and students. The efforts of its leaders, managers and teachers have allowed UMAB to successfully cross a series of qualitative steps that have made Mostaganem a true academic hub in the entire Western Region of the country and well beyond. His journey can be summarized as follows:

1978: Creation of the University Centre of Mostaganem. Decree No. 78-131 of June 8, 1978 establishing the University Centre of Mostaganem.

1984: Organization of the University Centre of Mostaganem

1992 : New organization of the institution

1997 : Transfer of the National Institute of Higher Agronomic Training (INFSA ex: ITA) to the University Centre  of Mostaganem.

1998 : Transfer from university Centre  to university by decree: Executive Decree No. 12-77 of 19 Rabie El Aouel 1433 corresponding to February 12, 2012 amending and supplementing Executive Decree No. 98-220 of July 7, 1998 establishing the University of Mostaganem.

2000 : Transfer of the National Institute of Training Public Works to the University of Mostaganem.

2003 : Creation of the Institute of Physical Sciences and Sports.

2009 : Reorganization of the University of Mostaganem (07 Faculties and 01 Institute).

2011 : Reorganization of the University of Mostaganem (opening of the Faculty of Medicine).

2013 : Restructuring of the faculties of the University of Mostaganem in 08 faculties and 01 institute and (creation of the Ecole NormaleSuperieure  and the Preparatory School in Sciences of Nature and Life).

2014: Creation of the Ecole NormaleSuperieure.

2016  : Reorganization of the University of Mostaganem (09 Faculties and 01 Institute).

Executive Decree No. 14-239 of 29 Chaoual 1435 corresponding to August 25, 2014 amending and supplementing Executive Decree No. 98-220 of 13 Rabie El Aouel 1419 corresponding to July 7, 1998 establishing the University of Mostaganem.  The University of Mostaganem bears the name of Abdelhamid Ibn Badis, an emblematic figure of the Muslim reform movement in Algeria. He was a teacher, philosopher, Muslim visionary, journalist, and revolutionary pen and knowledge. A national holiday “YOUM EL ILM” or “Knowledge Day” is celebrated in his honour on April 16 of each year, commemorating the date of his death.
