UNESCO Chair

The idea of the UNESCO Chair for the Culture of Peace was born from a consultation of University Rectors during the sub-regional conference on Current Conflicts and Culture of Peace, organised in June 1995 in Abidjan, by the National Commission Ivorian for UNESCO.

This Chair is seen as a response to the many armed conflicts and multiple social unrest that are shaking Africa on the one hand.

On the other hand, it underlines the importance of peace and the need to promote human rights and democracy. On December 5, 1997, the agreement of Establishment at the University of Cocody, was signed by Fréderico Mayor then Director General of UNESCO and Professor ASSEYPO Hauhouot, then President of the University of Cocody, on the sidelines of the handover ceremonies keys to the Houphouët Boigny Foundation for Peace Research in Yamoussoukro.
