Doctorate Degree in Medical Sciences

Admission Requirements:

Preparation for a Doctorate in Medical Sciences is limited to assistant professors in hospital-university positions upon their appointment.

They are supervised by a thesis director holding the rank of professor, head of a hospital-university department, or professor.

If necessary, a co-supervisor may be appointed.

Thesis Duration:

The thesis must be prepared and defended within 03 consecutive years.

If not completed, a one-year extension (renewable once) may be granted based on the supervisor’s opinion and scientific committee approval.

Registration and Re-registration:

Registration:

The registration process is carried out by:

Submitting a thesis topic proposal according to the schedule prepared by the faculty.

The thesis topic proposal is presented to a committee composed of 03 professors appointed by the faculty’s scientific council.

This committee gives its opinion within a maximum period of 03 months from the date of submission of the thesis topic proposal.

In case no opinion is provided, the thesis topic proposal is considered accepted.

Any request to change the thesis topic or the thesis supervisor must be justified and approved by the faculty’s scientific council.

The applicable laws and regulations do not recognize the freezing of doctoral registration.

The doctoral student must submit a sworn declaration committing to respecting the applicable laws, especially in matters of academic plagiarism.

Re-registration:

The re-registration process takes place once every academic year after validation of the progress of research work by the faculty’s scientific council.

When the thesis director declares the completion of the research work, a final report and a proposal of the defense committee members are submitted to the scientific council of the faculty.

In case the research is not completed after the third registration, the thesis director submits a report to obtain an additional registration from the dean of the faculty after obtaining the opinion of the scientific council.

Adjustment of Teaching Workload:

The researcher benefits from an adjustment and reduction of working time by submitting a request to the head of department, who presents it to the department’s scientific committee for opinion within 08 days.

In case of rejection, the request may be submitted to the faculty’s scientific council, which decides within 30 days from the date of submission.

Reduction Duration:

The reduction is calculated as follows:

25% during the first, second, and third years of doctoral registration.

50% during the thesis completion year, once and non-renewable.

The beneficiary of this authorization is not allowed to undertake teaching duties as a secondary activity.

Defense:

The thesis director submits a final report confirming completion of the research to the faculty’s scientific council, which appoints the members of the defense committee.
Each member of the defense committee prepares a report on the possibility of defense within a period not exceeding 03 months from the submission of the final report by the thesis director.
In case reservations are expressed, the thesis director and the candidate are informed and allowed to address them.
If both the thesis director and the candidate consider these reservations unfounded, a report is submitted to the scientific council for the appointment of a new committee.
If the committee maintains its reservations, the thesis director and the candidate are allowed to resolve them within a maximum period of 01 year from the submission of the report.
If there are no reservations, the public defense takes place within a maximum period of 06 months after the first meeting dedicated to appointing the defense committee.

Obtaining the Degree:

After the defense, which lasts between 20 to 30 minutes, the committee deliberates in a closed session and makes its decision by evaluating the doctoral candidate’s performance during the defense.
The title of Doctor is awarded with the distinction “Honorable” or “Very Honorable” by the defense committee.
The successful candidate receives the certificate of success after it is signed by the Dean of the faculty and the Rector of the university.
